Notes,
Commentary, Restoration:
Awaiting restoration is this classic 4-way fixed-face three signal
Harrington-Seaberg light. This light came from the quaint, historic town of
Wadsworth, Ohio; once home to the largest match factory in the world, the Ohio
Match Company whom manufactured the Ohio Blue-Tip Match. This is one of three
known surviving lights from the area as both the Traffic Signal Museum, and
Signalfan's collections also feature one of these lights from the same dealer.
In fact, these lights were housed in the Ohio Match factory before being sold.
I have found little in the way of detains in researching the history of this
company. Speculation, and product similarities lead many to believe Harrington
Seaberg was a successor to Darley in the traffic control offerings. Darley
stopped making signals in the 20's-30's and the Harrington-Seaberg Fire Alarm
and Telegraph Company was co-founded in 1921 by Fred Harrington and [Unk.]
Seaberg. They carried similar product lines, were both into mechanical equipment
and firefighting apparatus, and both based in the same regions of Illinois. Many
parts of their signals are identical in appearance if not interchangeable. The
Harrington’s, like the Darley's have moved on, yet still are retailing
firefighting apparatus out of Illinois via the Great-Grandson and Global Fire
Control Corp. As for the signal division, H-S was acquired by Mark IV, LFE
Automatic Signal, and finally Eagle Traffic Control Systems, itself now a part
of Siemens ITS.
